Jean RIGAUD
(1912 - 1999) Painter
to the French Ministry of Marine 1956
He went to the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris
(André Dewambez's studio).
In 1954 he had his first exhibition at the Galerie Durand-Ruel. He exhibited painting that
he had done during his travels to Spain, Egypt, Morocco, and all the west coast of France.
As an Official Marine Painter, he embarked on the Jean Bart on a voyage to the United
States. This was the first of many sea passages under the auspices of the Marine
Nationale.
Passionate about islands, he appreciates the solitude which allows him to meditate at
leisure before selecting his subject. His inner drive shows itself in his nervous
brushwork, using rich, sensual coloured paint, often worked with a knife. Boats on a beach,
sparkelingly coloured harbours, fishing villages, reveal that the artist's deepest
feelings are not always without melancoly.
From the very start, he chose big subjects. He developed his style using to advantage pure
colour tones ( ochres, yellows and red cadmium) which stand out triumphantly against the
grey skies.
Jean Rigaud is placed without doubt in the great tradition of realist and impressionist
painters.
His canvasses are exhibited worldwide in major art galleries. A number of his works have
been acquired by the French State, La Ville de Paris, le Musée de la Marine etc.
